How do investment firms get paid?
Commission-Based Model
Investment companies can be privately or publicly owned, and they engage in the management, sale, and marketing of investment products to the public. Investment companies make profits by buying and selling shares, property, bonds, cash, other funds and other assets.
A commission-based financial advisor doesn't cost you anything—directly, that is. They get compensated by commissions from the products they sell to you or sell for you. Typical commissions for investment products and packages range from 3-6% of the sale.
The average investment management fee is over 1% for $1 million in assets under management. It's important to know what kinds of fees firms may charge and how they structure them.
How Do Investors Make Money? Investors make money in two ways: appreciation and income. Appreciation occurs when an asset increases in value. An investor purchases an asset in the hopes that its value will grow and they can then sell it for more than they bought it for, earning a profit.
Compensation for CEOs at major financial firms ranged from roughly $25 million to $35 million in 2023, with pay rising sharply for some and dropping for others. Precisely how investors view executive compensation packages may depend, however, on which reported figures they consider.
Stock Brokerage Firm | Assets under management* |
---|---|
Vanguard Group | $8.6 trillion |
Charles Schwab | $8.5 trillion |
Fidelity Investments | $4.4 trillion |
JPMorgan Chase & Co. | $3.9 trillion |
Financial Consultants receive a base salary for serving clients. Depending on their professional experience and past work performance, some Financial Consultants also receive Relationship Pay.

In a brokerage account, you generally compensate Morgan Stanley and your Financial Advisor through a commission for each equity transaction, a mark-up/ mark-down for bond transactions and a sales charge for mutual fund transactions.
Is a 1% fee for a financial advisor worth it?
But, if you're already working with an advisor, the simplest way to determine whether a 1% fee is reasonable may be to look at what they've helped you accomplish. For example, if they've consistently helped you to earn a 12% return in your portfolio for five years running, then 1% may be a bargain.
Most of my research has shown people saying about 1% is normal. Answer: From a regulatory perspective, it's usually prohibited to ever charge more than 2%, so it's common to see fees range from as low as 0.25% all the way up to 2%, says certified financial planner Taylor Jessee at Impact Financial.
Billable Assets | Fee Schedule |
---|---|
First $1 million | 0.80% |
Next $1 million (more than $1M up to $2M) | 0.75% |
Next $3 million (more than $2M up to $5M) | 0.70% |
Assets over $5 million | 0.30% |
Investors can earn through appreciation, interest or dividends. If you choose to finance a small business, you'll earn money through interest payments. If you choose to buy shares in a small business, you'll receive a portion of the company's earnings over time.
A dividend is usually a cash payment from earnings that companies pay to their investors. Dividends are typically paid on a quarterly basis, though some pay annually, and a small few pay monthly.
